Hard Choices

Scripture:  Mark 14:27-31

Observation:  I can sense the tension between Jesus and the religious leaders as he continues to discuss with them what it means to really live for God.  I bet it was frustrating to constantly be questioned and to have highly respected people trying to trip Jesus up.  I wonder how awkward the last passover meal Jesus ate with his friends was?  I wonder if Jesus ever thought about not mentioning what Judas would do?  I wonder if Jesus ever thought about not confronting Peter about his imminent betrayal?  I think all of these situations were difficult for Jesus.  I also think they serve as a powerful example to us.

Application:  Peter’s passion is admirable.  I imagine that it was catching.  It would later attract many to the cause of Christ.  Later that night Peter would discover how very difficult it is to live out your passion in the real world.  Peter gave in to the easy response.  Jesus in each of the difficult situations he faced sided with the truth.  So often we confuse the easy response with love.  Ignoring someones poor choices, ignoring the broken relationship this holiday season, looking past our own sin might seem like love.  It would, however, be the exact opposite.  Sometimes passion isn’t enough.  Sometimes we must exercise courage.  Sometimes we must have the difficult conversation.  There will be days for us like Peter’s.  Never forget in the middle of those days that Peter was forgiven and served on other days in powerful ways!

Prayer:  Father God, help us make the wise choice.  Help us to exercise our passion in the most difficult situations.  Please God give us courage through your spirit.
